SUMMARY:Fall Lecture & Reception: Inga Saffron\, Print City (Video)
DESCRIPTION:Join us in person for our Fall Lecture & Reception in the McNeil Building. \n\n\n\nPrint City: How Newspaper Buildings Shaped Philadelphia’s Downtown \n\n\n\nInga Saffron is the architecture critic for the Philadelphia Inquirer. For more than 25 years\, she has been a forceful advocate for meaningful design\, accessible public spaces and transit\, affordable housing\, historic preservation and policies that make our cities more liveable and climate resilient.  Her work has been recognized with numerous awards\, including the 2014 Pulitzer Prize for Criticism\, the 2018 Vincent Scully Prize from the National Building Museum\,  a 2012  Loeb Fellowship from Harvard’s Graduate School of Design and a 2023 Guggenheim Fellowship.  \n\n\n\nInga began her career as a municipal reporter in New Jersey\,  and went on to become a foreign correspondent in Eastern Europe and the former Soviet Union. In the 1990s\, she covered wars in Yugoslavia and Russia\, where she witnessed the destruction of Sarajevo and Grozny. She has published two books: Becoming Philadelphia: How an old American city made itself new again\, a selection of her Inquirer columns\, and Caviar: The Strange History and Uncertain Future of the World’s Most Coveted Delicacy\, a cultural history of the sturgeon. She is currently working on a social and architectural history of the American newspaper building\, tentatively titled Holding the Presses: How Newspaper Buildings Shaped the American City. \n\n\n\nToday\, just a single\, mass circulation newspaper exists in Philadelphia and you would be hard-pressed to find out where it is located. But a century ago\, Philadelphia’s downtown was home to more than a dozen daily newspapers. These papers\, which exhibited a strong pack mentality (much like journalists themselves)\, established offices in close proximity to one another. They formed distinct media enclaves or newspaper rows\, where presses clanked through the night and the tang of ink scented the air. Because their buildings could be used for self-promotion\, newspapers competed with one another to construct ever-grander works of architecture in an effort to attract readers. These ornate structures became physical expressions of the civic exchange that took place on their pages\, and served as quasi-public places where people gathered to celebrate\, protest and confirm important news events. Sadly\, many of Philadelphia’s great newspaper buildings have been demolished.  As newspapers and their buildings fade from view\, we have lost an important civic connection. Like so many products we consume\, we have no idea any longer where our news originates\, making it increasingly difficult to separate the real from the fake. The research for this talk comes from a forthcoming history of American newspaper buildings provisionally titled\, Building the News.

SUMMARY:Kevin B. Johnson\, The Observer Project: Transforming Healthcare from the Outside (Video)
DESCRIPTION:Spring Lecture and Reception with Kevin B. Johnson \n\n\n\n \n\n\n\nThe current US healthcare system faces criticism for escalating costs\, stagnant quality\, and a largely unrealized benefit from billions of dollars in investment. Recent advances in AI can play a critical role in various medical tasks\, such as identifying patients at risk of disease and generating medical visit summaries. These advances are already transforming other industries\, but are slow to be adopted in medicine\, in part because of the sensitive nature of health care encounters and of their data exhaust. The goal of the Observer project is to create an open resource that provides data and contextual information that will inform research bridging medicine\, engineering\, and other disciplines focusing on health and healthcare. The presentation will discuss the work underway to build this resource\, as well as some potential projects based on what has been seen to date.

SUMMARY:C. Brian Rose\, Troy and Gordion: An Excavator’s Perspective (Video)
DESCRIPTION:Video\n\n\n\n\nC. Brian Rose James B. Pritchard Professor of Mediterranean Archaeology\, University of Pennsylvania; \n\n\n\nPeter C. Ferry Curator-in-Charge\, Mediterranean Section\, Penn Museum of Archaeology and Anthropology; \n\n\n\nDirector\, Gordion Archaeological Project \n\n\n\nSchliemann began excavations at Troy in the 1870s\, and claimed that he had found evidence there of the battles between the Homeric heroes. Gordion was the capital city of King Midas\, famous for his Golden Touch\, and the site of the Gordian Knot that was severed by Alexander the Great. In this talk Professor Rose will highlight the positive and negative aspects of working at both projects\, and focus on the extent to which regional\, national\, and global developments have shaped research agendas. He will also reflect on the discipline of archaeology in Turkey and the Near East.

SUMMARY:Katie L. Barott\, Coral Reefs are Sentinels of the Biodiversity Crisis (Video)
DESCRIPTION:View video\n\n\n\n\nKatie L. Barott\, PhDAssociate Professor of BiologyUniversity of Pennsylvania \n\n\n\nCoral reefs are among the most diverse ecosystems on our planet\, yet over half of the world’s corals have been lost over the last century due to a combination of human disturbances including fishing\, pollution\, and climate change. Coral reefs are particularly sensitive to ocean warming\, and my research investigates how dynamic ocean environments might promote coral resilience and survival in our rapidly changing seas.

SUMMARY:Judith Rodin\, Philadelphia Then and Now: Penn’s Role in the Transition
DESCRIPTION:Judith Rodin President Emerita\, University of Pennsylvania Former President\, The Rockefeller Foundation \n\n\n\nin conversation with Janice Bellace \, PASEF Past President \n\n\n\nHaving been a student at Penn in the 1960s\, Judy Rodin encountered a much different campus when she returned as president in 1994. Deindustrialization had led to an exodus of jobs in Philadelphia\, there had been racial and socio-economic changes to the area west of campus\, crime rates had risen\, and campus itself now featured flat-top parking lots along Walnut Street. In this talk\, Rodin will discuss how she confronted these challenges and embarked on a program not limited to campus\, but which saw Penn as a force to better West Philadelphia. She will also discuss how this now extends far beyond campus to the Bellwether District. \n\n\n\nHoliday reception follows at 4:30 PM.

SUMMARY:Francis X. Diebold\, Climate Forecasting: Arctic Sea Ice Melting – How Soon? (Video)
DESCRIPTION:Fall Lecture and Receptions withFrancis X. DieboldPaul F. Miller\, Jr. and E. Warren Shafer Miller Professor of Social SciencesProfessor of Economics\, Finance\, and Statistics and Data Science \n\n\n\nArctic temperatures are rising significantly faster than the global average\, a trend closely linked to a severe\, multi-decade decline in Arctic sea ice. This dramatic loss not only serves as a clear indicator of ongoing climate change but also influences the rate at which future climate change will advance. As a result\, Arctic sea-ice loss has been the subject of extensive research\, often utilizing complex computer models to predict future conditions. Unfortunately\, these models have consistently underestimated sea-ice loss in recent decades\, and their long-term forecasts can vary considerably. In this talk\, I will (1) sketch this background in some detail; (2) introduce a straightforward and reliable statistical forecasting method that suggests ice-free Arctic summers are likely by 2040—much sooner than most computer models predict; and (3) explore why computer models have struggled with sea-ice forecasting and offer constructive suggestions for improving their accuracy. \n\n\n\nZoom link will be sent to registered attendees.
