Roger Allen is the Sascha Jane Patterson Harvie Professor of Social Thought and Comparative Ethics Emeritus in the Department of Near Eastern Languages and Civilizations.

The lecture will be held from 12:00-1:30 p.m. in the Hourglass Room in the University Club in the Inn at Penn. Lunch is available for a modest cost. 

Join us for our annual Spring outing! This year we have arranged for a trip to the Brandywine Museum of Art in Chadds Ford. Members of PASEF and their guests are welcome.

Date: Thursday, April 28th

Arrival time at Brandywine: 10:30 a.m.

Guided tour of Special Exhibition: 10:45a.m. to 11:45 a.m.

The tours will be in groups of 10 or 15. The special exhibition is entitled The Poetry of Nature: The Golden Age of Landscape Painting. It is a powerful interpretation of American scenery.

Unguided viewing of other art work: 11:45 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.

Lunch in the Café: 12:30 p.m. to 1:30 p.m. We will have a sectioned off space with a beautiful view of the Brandywine River.

Departure: 1:30 p.m.

Per person charge: $15

We have made arrangements for those who would prefer not to drive. Specific directions, and the details of the Penn bus arrangements will be sent to those who are coming. The number of participants will be limited to 40.

Please join us for Part II of our annual “Road to Retirement” series on Thursday, April 21, 2016, from 3:30-5:00 p.m. in the Class of ’55 Room on the second floor of the Van Pelt-Dietrich library.

This session offers expert advice about the practical nuts-and-bolts aspects of the transition to retirement, such as phased retirement options, the Faculty Income Allowance Program (FIAP), pre-retirement sabbaticals, health and other benefits for eligible retirees and their families, emeritus status, and the rights and privileges of retired faculty. It will be informative both for those who are contemplating retirement and for those who have already chosen retirement.

The speakers will be Hilary Lopez, Senior Benefits Specialist in the University’s Human Resources office, and Victoria Mulhern, Executive Director of Faculty Affairs and Professional Development in the Perelman School of Medicine. They will review options related to retirement, and also note recent changes.

A wine and cheese reception after the program will give you an opportunity for informal conversation with other Penn colleagues, both retired and active.

Although no reservation is required, if you expect to attend, we would appreciate your letting us know so we can have the appropriate quantity of seats and refreshments.

The Reverend Charles L. Howard, PhD is the University Chaplain at the University of Pennsylvania, his alma mater. He is the author of several articles and chapters and his writings have been featured in such publications as Black Arts Quarterly, Black Theology: An International Journal, Daily Good, Urban Cusp, Sojourners Magazine, and The Huffington Post, where he is a regular contributor. Along with his duties as Chaplain, Chaz has taught at Penn in the College of Arts and Sciences and in the Graduate School of Education.

Brian Peterson PhD is the Director of the Makuu Black Cultural Center at the University of Pennsylvania. He is a three-time graduate of the University of Pennsylvania – first from the School of Engineering and Applied Sciences, and later earning his masters and doctorate from the Graduate School of Education. Presently he teaches or co-teaches two courses including The History of Women and Men of African Descent at the University of Pennsylvania.

If you are thinking about retirement, whether soon or further down the road, PASEF’s program on Thursday, March 24, will give you an excellent perspective on what retirement has meant for four distinguished members of Penn’s faculty—Lynn Lees (SAS/History), Alan Myers (SEAS/Chemical and Biomolecular Engineering), James Saunders (PSOM/Otorhinolaryngology-Head and Neck Surgery), and Neville Strumpf (Nursing). This panel discussion will take place from 3:30 to 5:00 in the Class of ’55 Room on the second floor of the Van Pelt-Dietrich Library. A wine and cheese reception after the program will give you an opportunity for informal conversation with panel members and other Penn colleagues, both retired and active.

Jeremy Siegel is the Russell E. Palmer Professor of Finance at the Wharton School. Siegel comments extensively on the economy and financial market; appears regularly on networks such as CNN, CNBC and NPR, and writes regular columns for Kiplinger’s Personal Finance and Yahoo!.

Paul A. Offit is the Director of the Vaccine Education Center at the Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia as well as the Maurice R. Hilleman Professor of Vaccinology and a Professor of Pediatrics at the Perelman School of Medicine.

James (Torch) Lytle, now retired, was an Adjunct Practice Professor in the Graduate School of Education. From 1998 to 2006, he was superintendent for the Trenton (New Jersey) Public Schools, where he led an aggressive effort to implement New Jersey’s urban education reform initiative.

Annette Lareau is Stanley I. Sheerr Term Professor in the Social Sciences and is currently the Past President of the American Sociological Association.

Guy Ramsey is the Edmund J. and Louise W. Kahn Term Professor of Music, author of The Amazing Bud Powell: Black Genius, Jazz History and the Challenge of Bebop and the director of the short film Amazing: The Tests and Triumph of Bud Powell.

Charles L. Nelson, MD, is Chief of the Joint Replacement Service and an Associate Professor of Orthopaedic Surgery at the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania.

Jeffrey Rosen is currently a professor of law at George Washington University Law School as well as a nonresident senior fellow at the Brookings Institution. Since 2013, Prof. Rosen has served as the President and CEO of the National Constitution Center.
