- Adolescent Development
This presentation will describe the developmental period of adolescence and seven core developmental needs, such as purpose, emotional regulation, and social relationships. Applications to real world situations will be provided. - Black Youth Suicide Prevention
Black youth suicide has received national attention over the last several years due to the increasing rates of suicide deaths and attempts that have been shown in studies. This presentation will cover recent trends in suicidal behaviors among Black youth as well as risk and protective factors unique to this population. An overview of assessment and interventions for suicide prevention through a culturally and developmentally responsive lens will be provided. - Intergenerational Transmission of Depression and Suicide
This presentation will explore depression and suicide risk across two generations-youth and their parents/caregivers. A theoretical model of the intergenerational transmission of depression from a parent to a child will be presented and as well as its application to suicide risk. The role of parenting as a mechanism in this transmission will be emphasized, along with a parenting intervention designed for caregivers with depression. - Social Media and Civic Discourse
This presentation will describe social media use and its strengths and drawbacks, including the impact on mental health. It will elicit discussion concerning how social media is utilized in civic discourse and highlight topics such as addressing online conflict and countering misinformation.
