A History of the Opioid Epidemic: How Did We Get Here?

This presentation will provide an historical perspective on the beginnings of the opioid epidemic in the 1990’s through developments in the 2000’s (the introduction of illicit fentanyl for example), to current trends. The roles played by physicians, pharmaceutical companies,  distributors and drug cartels will be discussed.

Mood Disorders and Their Treatments

In this presentation, major depressive disorder and bipolar disorder characteristics will be outlined. Various medications used to treat these common illnesses will be discussed. Lastly, newer medical treatments under development will be mentioned.

Understanding The New Weight Loss Medications

Medications such as semaglutide (Wegovy) and tirzepatide (Zepbound) have markedly impacted the treatment of obesity in the US. The mechanisms by which these medications assert their effects will be discussed. Benefits beyond weight loss will be elaborated. Finally, novel uses for these compounds will be mentioned.
