Judith Rodin, Philadelphia Then and Now: Penn’s Role in the Transition
Judith Rodin
President Emerita, University of Pennsylvania
Former President, The Rockefeller Foundation
in conversation with
Janice Bellace , PASEF Past President
Having been a student at Penn in the 1960s, Judy Rodin encountered a much different campus when she returned as president in 1994. Deindustrialization had led to an exodus of jobs in Philadelphia, there had been racial and socio-economic changes to the area west of campus, crime rates had risen, and campus itself now featured flat-top parking lots along Walnut Street. In this talk, Rodin will discuss how she confronted these challenges and embarked on a program not limited to campus, but which saw Penn as a force to better West Philadelphia. She will also discuss how this now extends far beyond campus to the Bellwether District.
Holiday reception follows at 4:30 PM.
